Dissecting hearts at school - Dont open this if you can't stand blood, hearts or me
So today we had to dissect hearts for my study since we're discussing the subject hearts and their diseases. We all got a heart of our own and I had a lovely pig heart, which looks identical to a human heart. One of my classmates had a cow's heart, which is bigger and looks completely different.
Some had a heart that was already cut open, this is because the butcher has to check the heart to see if its healthy. I had a heart that wasnt cut open already.
So this was the heart before I cut it open, it was as big as my fist. The light pink stuff is fat the rest is all muscle.
Here is me at work, trying to find the place to cut the heart open with putting an instrument in the aorta and following it.
Weeeeh found it! Let the cutting begin
This is the heart cut open. On the right you can see the left ventricle, the instrument that's sticking out shows the pulmonary artery.
This is how the left ventricle looks like in close up. The string that you see here are connected to the cardiac valve and they open and close the valve which each pump that the heart makes. The cardiac valves lets blood flow in the heart and makes sure that it doesnt flow back to where the blood came from.
Here's a little close up on the cardiac valves in the right ventricle.
We also had a heart of a cow this is what it looked like partially cut open. The big hole that you see is the aorta, which is a huge artery.
Here's the cow's heart cut open.
I hope that you guys like the photos and the little bit of information that I gave!

Good job! Did you learn a lot from it? Some poor piggy donated his heart to further your education.
